Two of the game’s leading architects, Harry Colt and Dr Alister MacKenzie, have both played a hand in making Headingley what it is today.

And, over 100 years later, the remains in a completely rural setting, enjoys many wonderful views and boasts many memorable holes which make full use of the varied and dramatic terrain. The course stretches to over 6500 yards off the back tees, with a par of 71, and the layout is routed in a traditional out-and-back style, with the outward half considerably longer than an inward one.

Three of the four short holes come on the second nine and the closing holes, in particular MacKenzie’s 16th and 17th, are recognised as the standout holes. It is hard to define the character of Headingley as it is played over such varied terrain; part heathland, moorland and parkland and the club prides itself on its year-round playability, very rarely closing, and not using winter greens nor artificial tees.
